In today’s business climate, cybersecurity is more important than ever. With large-scale cyber-attacks making headlines on a regular basis, it’s essential for businesses to understand the biggest threats out there. October is “National Cybersecurity Awareness Month so we want to touch on five of the biggest cybersecurity incidents in 2022.

  • In June Shields Health Care Group was breached that affected more than 2 million patients. An attacker reportedly used valid login credentials (protect your username and password) and it appears he was undetected for a while.
  • In January over $30 million in cryptocurrency was stolen from crypto.com. They supposedly got into user accounts for users that were not using two-factor authentication. Use this whenever possible.
  • Also in January Twitter fell victim to a ‘zero-day vulnerability’ (not a known vulnerability and without a fix at the time) that affected 5.4 million users.
  • In April the Russian ransomware group Conti hacked the Costa Rica Ministry of Finance and demanded a $20 million ransom. They refused to pay but many of their systems were offline or crippled for months and the president ordered a state of emergency.
  • The Red Cross was also hit in January, when their supply chain was penetrated because of an unpatched vulnerability (keep your systems up to date). Over 515,000 employees, volunteer and beneficiaries’ records were compromised.
